Home Builders Supply Co. is celebrating their 75th Anniversary.
Established in 1948 by Marvin K. Blount Sr., Dr. John D. Messick, Mr. E. Hoover Taft Jr., Mr. H.A. Lane, and Mr. Thompson D. Litchfield in Greenville, Home Builders Supply Co has remained a leader in the supplier of building materials for the past 75 years. Today, the business still practices its founding principles: establishing strong client relationships and providing the most trusted and reliable commercial and residential materials in the industry to customers and the surrounding community. These principles are the key ingredients to the company’s growth and survival.
As a third generation, family owned and operated business, Home Builder’s Supply Co’s ability to adapt as times changed has contributed to the company’s progression. William Gray Blount, Sr. became President of Home Builders Supply Co. in 1980. He led the company through the real estate market slowdown caused by the Savings and Loan Crisis in the 1980s.

William Gray Blount Jr., the third generation of the Blount family who spent many afternoons and summers working in the family business, officially joined the company in 1995 after graduating from East Carolina University School of Business. He became Vice President in 1998.
Through strong leadership, the company has continued to grow and improve. In 2007 HBS Co. opened a stand-alone paint store, Inner Banks Paint & Decorating. The company expanded their footprint to Wilson, and completed the Greenville design center featuring windows, doors and cabinets in 2009. In 2015, the business grew again with the addition of HBS Commercial Division, and in 2021 HBS Commercial moved to their current location at 201 Hooker Road, Greenville.
Home Builders Supply Co and HBS Commercial employ an exceptional team of loyal and hardworking employees who make up their family. The company employees over 75 people between Home Builders Supply Greenville and Wilson, HBS Commercial, and Inner Banks Paint & Decorating.
“Under the dedicated leadership of our General Manager, Jason Tew, we have maintained continued growth,” noted Gray Blount, President. “Jason was key to forming the “We Care” ministry which helps serve the needs of the company’s employees and families. Aside from the company’s daily business, Home Builders Supply Co. has always given back to the community that has supported them. Over the years they have supported many organizations including the Heart Center at ECU Health (formerly PCMH), ECU Athletics, Third Street Education Center, and Community Crossroads Center, to name a few. The company also funds a scholarship at the School of Construction Management at East Carolina University for young men and women planning a career in the building industry. HBS Co. is also members of the Greenville-Pitt County Chamber of Commerce, the Wilson Chamber of Commerce and Greenville Pitt County Home Builders Association.
